PERSONAL STATEMENT
I enjoy being a student athlete because balancing academics with athletics prepares me for the harsh situations that come with adult life. I like the term student athlete because it implies a student and academic first attitude. I was always taught that grades come first and I follow that standard regardless of the situation. I also enjoy helping younger students and athletes with any questions or problems that they face because I know how difficult it is to be a young student athlete. My curre

Title: Head Football Coach
Organization / School: Redondo Union HS
Recommendation: I write to nominate an outstanding young student athlete, Brett Kassel. The basis for the award suits Brett well as he has shown each of the “4 C’s” early in his career. Though just a 10th grader, Brett is a fine example of what this award is about.

Brett has served our football program fully and well as a major contributor on both the varsity and jv teams. He has played our long snapper for the varsity punt team and refined his snapping skill through long hours of solo practice – above and beyond what we asked of him. This has resulted in him being an excellent long snapper for the varsity, and he has been a fine back-up center on our offensive line as needed in addition. He also has been a mainstay starter for our jv squad and is poised to take a leadership role on the varsity for the next (2011, 2012) 2 years.

Brett has committed a lot of time and energy to our program knowing fully that he may not get to play much in regular varsity offensive schemes. This hasn’t deterred his effort as he is 100% involved and with us regardless of the likelihood of his personal gain. In short he has been a super dependable player who gets his job done on the field, at practice and in games. Furthermore, he is not gifted with great size, speed, or strength, yet he has overachieved to be the success he has been. He is the embodiment of “the size of the heart in the dog”… instead of just the size of the dog determining a favorable outcome.

Additionally, along with the contribution, commitment, and courage just mentioned, Brett has excellent character and regularly shows his practice of doing what’s right in a given situation. He is also an excellent student and therefore a leader among his peers and well respected by his coaches. Overall, he is excelling early in his career, and acknowledgment of this by an award from your organization is fitting for him.

Thank you for recognizing youngsters such as Brett Kassel. He and kids like him deserve a nice pat on the back, and an award such as this is right for him.
