We at SportsForce would like to congratulate Ethan Widoff for his commitment to Southwestern University on a baseball scholarship. Here is Ethan’s recruiting story and interview from after he committed. We wish Ethan the best as a Pirate.
1. Share your recruiting story and status (ex. what was the process like? when did you commit/sign?) My recruiting story started somewhere around 18 years ago when I first fell in love with baseball. My parents like to tell the story that my first word was “ball,” and that I could throw a baseball before I could even sit up. Needless to say, it has been my dream to play collegiate baseball since I was a little kid, and I always kept pushing towards that goal. I first began visiting colleges casually as a freshman and attended my first college showcase my sophomore summer. After my team and I won the State Championship that summer, I sent out an email with my athletic, academic, and philanthropic stats along with a skills video to nearly 100 college coaches and waited to see what kind of response I would get. It was around this time that my family and I made the choice to join the SportsForce team based off of a recommendation from my high school coach, who has been coaching for over 40 years now, and our initial conversation with my future SportsForce advisor, Andrew Beinbrink. Being the first child in the family, my parents and I had never dealt with any sort of recruiting since my parents were in high school, and so we knew that joining SportsForce was a necessary step to reaching my dream of playing collegiate baseball. At that point in time, I traveled around the country, participating in showcases at DI, DII, and DIII colleges, while visiting as many campuses that I could. I began to make initial connections with coaches that became very valuable down the road. After a strong spring season, I entered the summer heading into my senior year ready to find a home for the next four years. Among other places, I headed to Sacramento, CA for the Head First Honor Roll Showcase, which was an incredible event that focused on getting strong student-athletes seen by as many equally strong academic schools as possible. While playing collegiate baseball was my dream, going to a strong academic school was my number one priority, and this showcase was a great event to find schools that fit the bill for my athletic and academic abilities. After this event and the end of my summer, I headed into the fall with my list narrowed to 5 schools- Macalester College, Washington University in St. Louis, Southwestern University, The College of Wooster, and Centre College. I was able to take official visits to all of these schools in just three weekends! I got very accustomed to long plane rides and little sleep. At the end of the day, the official visits were a lot of fun, but I was ready to make a decision. I think from the moment I stepped on campus, I did know what school was right for me, but I wanted to consider all of my options and make an educated decision. I remember getting ready for bed one night about a week after all of my official visits, looking in the mirror, and thinking to myself, “You know where you want to go; Southwestern is going to be your home for the next four years.” I sat my parents down and told them that I had made my decision. It certainly wasn’t easy because I truly did believe that all five of the schools that I saw would have been great fits, and even more importantly, the people at those schools all treated my family and me with more respect and kindness than I could ever ask for. It was tough having to call the other four coaches and tell them that I wasn’t going to be going to their school, but I will never forget the phone call with Coach Thomas when I told him that I was going to verbally commit to Southwestern University. I thank my parents, family, friends, coaches, and the entire SportsForce Team for helping me reach my dream. Without them, there is no way I would be signing this coming Wednesday and realizing my childhood dream. 2. What school are you going to, and why did you choose them? I will be attending Southwestern University in Georgetown, TX. In the end, I chose to be a Pirate because it felt like home. I have always loved Texas, the country music, BBQ, and big trucks. My parents both went to our rival school, Trinity University in San Antonio, TX, so I have spent a lot of time in Texas, and many of my parents’ best friends whom I have grown very close to still live there. My grandparents, aunt, uncle, and two little cousins live in Austin, only about 20 minutes from my campus. But most importantly, everyone at SU, from my admissions counselor, Mara Weidmann, to Coach Thomas and the rest of his coaching staff, and all of the students on campus made me feel wanted when I was on campus. I felt like I would have the opportunity to go there for four years and accomplish some great things on and off the field because of the support system that I had built there, and this, in the end, was why I chose SU. 3. How did SportsForce help in the process? SportsForce was instrumental in my recruiting process because my family had never dealt with something like this before, and so SportsForce was there every step of the way to guide us through the whole process. From late night calls or text with my recruiting coach, Andrew Beinbrink, on when I should call coaches, what I should ask, and how to make my decision, to the team putting together my recruiting video, they were there for us every step of the way. The recruiting process is an overwhelming, and even scary time, but SportsForce was always there to give me the confidence that I needed to eventually reach my childhood dream of playing at the college level.
4. What advice would you give to other players and parents with the recruiting process (ex. start early, get a highlight video)? I think the biggest thing is to be proactive in the entire process. I have always believed that if you want something that badly, you have to work your tail end off so that you can go out there and take it. On the field, in the classroom, or in the recruiting world- it is no different. Always call coaches back right away, introduce yourself to as many people as you can, and when you get the opportunity to show your skills, make the most of it. But at the end of the day, don’t forget to have fun. Being recruited is one of the coolest things that has ever happened to me, and it only happens once, so I would tell any young kid to never take it for granted. Coaches love to see enthusiasm and character, so just be yourself, play as hard as you can, and leave it all out there. If you are going to make mistakes- that’s ok, just make them by being too aggressive. Always attack, and never shy away from the pressure. Have the time of your life, and at the end of the day, always believe that things will work out. I promise you, they will. 5. How excited are you for your future in college? I can’t put into words how excited I am to get to SU next year. I feel so incredibly lucky to be able to join such a great community, and I can’t wait to get to work there. My clothes, car decals, screensavers, etc. are all black and yellow right now… I can’t wait to be a Pirate and see all the great things we can accomplish there together. 6. How much money do you anticipate your familysavingin college expensesbecause of you being recruited? Since Southwestern is DIII, they can’t offer any athletic scholarship, but at a minimum, I have been awarded $96,000 over the four years for academics. 7. Would you recommend SportsForce to any other student-athletes? Why?Absolutely. Anyone can tell you to go to a bunch of showcases and send out highlight videos, but what separates SportsForce from the rest is the people there. They truly care about you the student-athlete. As mentioned early, the recruiting process can be a difficult time, and there are going to be days where you feel lost and defeated. The people at SportsForce understand what it is like, and understand how to turn the headaches into smiles. Their dream is your dream, and they won’t stop working until that dream has been achieved. I can’t thank the SportsForce team enough for helping me reach my dream, and I would advise any aspiring collegiate athlete to join to SportsForce team so that one day, their dream can become a reality too.

We want to congratulate Ryan Orr on verbally committing to play college baseball at San Diego State University. Here is Ryan’s recruiting story and interview from after he committed. We wish Ryan the best as an Aztec!

1. Share your recruiting story and status (what was the process like?) Ryan has a verbal offer and has given a verbal commitment. He just started his Jr. year in high school. The recruiting process went relatively fast. He had done well in National Tournaments the summer between his freshman and Sophomore year so he started getting on some college’s radar. The key in my opinion is that he plays with an excellent travel ball team (San Diego Show) so he was at the big tournaments and there were lots of scouts watching the games. They may have been there to watch other kids but he had his chance to make an impression. His club team also does a good job of getting his and other kids names out to the colleges so they take a look. Before every big tournament Ryan would also send out e-mails to the colleges he was interested in providing a link to his Sportsforce website and letting them know when and where he was playing. Due to the # of hits on his webpage we think it played a big role in him getting seen. He was talking to a few schools going into this last summer between his Sophomore and Junior year. That is when things started moving quickly. He did well in the Perfect Game WWBA 16U National Championships in Georgia hitting .542 and making the all tournament team. The Perfect Game tournaments are key to getting seen. They are by far the best run and have the most scouts. Doing well in this tournament got him invited to the Perfect Game Underclass All American Games at USD. He did well there as well. The day after this Showcase we did the SDSU visit and Ryan was given the verbal offer. He also did a visit to another DI school in CA that same week and while the baseball program is excellent, Ryan was not thrilled with the location nor feel of the campus. He also did a drive by of another D1 school that was interested in him but did not like the campus location nor feel. SDSU was clearly where he wanted to go so he committed on 9/16. 2. What school are you going to, and why did you choose them? San Diego State: The baseball coaches did a fantastic job of presenting their program and our entire family felt like they were being very honest and upfront about what the program offered. Clearly they liked Ryan and made him feel very welcome. They gave a great campus tour and the facilities were impressive. The program is also on the upswing with 2 NCAA tournament berths in a row and the coaches made it clear that their next goal is to advance further in the tournament and become a perennial National threat. Ryan wants to be a part of this. Ryan’s older brother also just started school there so that played a role in the decision. He/we also like to the location being close to home. It was just a perfect fit all around. 3. How did SportsForce help in the process? Having the website for Ryan was huge. We were actually on a college tour and the baseball coach asked if we had any video of Ryan. On the spot we pulled up the Sportforce website and he was able to see his video. This was a big plus. I had just wished we had a more recent video package as it was over a year old. The access to college coach e-mails was also key to streamlining the process. We also liked the regular advice on how to navigate the process and the proper way to approach coaches and put together e-mails to coaches. All in all it was very much worth the $. 4. What advice would you give to other players and parents with the recruiting process? First and foremost the player needs to play with and against the best players in their area. Being the best player on a horrible team and only playing local tournaments does you no good. The travel ball and high school team that they play for is important as the better ones just get more scouts coming to their games. Ryan is very fortunate to play for the San Diego Show and La Costa Canyon High School. The coaches in both of these organizations are the best around and have helped Ryan with his development and promotion to colleges. The recruiters, in my opinion, can sniff out talent very quickly and if you are not good enough to play in college then all the exposure and websites will not do you any good. Having said that, it is equally important to be proactive with how your son or daughter gets their information out there. The top players will get found whether or not they self promote. If you are not in the group, however, then you need to do some self promotion. Sportsforce is a great way to organize the process. They know how and when to do each step. Coaches get hundreds of e-mails and letters each week from parents and players. Yours needs to stand out or it doesn’t get read. Sportsforce provides an easy template for getting you thru this process.     Our Mission at SportsForce Baseball: We are on a mission to help our select number of qualified and evaluated players maximize their recruiting offers and make the best college decision. We want to congratulate Blake McNamara on signing with Wheelock College. Here is Blake’s recruiting story and interview from after he committed. We wish Blake the best as a Wheelock Wildcat!

1. Share your recruiting story and status (what was the process like?)

On April 29, I committed to Wheelock College. I phoned the coach and infomed him of my decision. The process was exciting. I really enjoyed conversing with College coaches and recruiter (asst. Coaches). I went on several visits to different schools to get a feel for the campus, the coaches, etc. each time my family and I were invited to watch the team play. That piece gave me a real good idea of what type of players the coaches recruit as well as the coaching styles.

2. What school are you going to, and why did you choose them?

I choose Wheelock because their collegiate Basketball program is top notch. What I mean by that is the Coach LeVangie is great, he truly invests himself in each player and took a great deal of time to meet with myself and my family. Coach LeVangie meets with players once per week to check in on their academic load and how it’s going, he looks out for his team and it is a comforting to know he has your back. The campus is nice and right in the heart of Boston, it is in the “Fenway Five” district (5 area colleges in the consortium).

3. How did SportsForce help in the process?

SportsForce was instrumental in getting my video and portfolio out to college coaches. They assisted me every step of the way, with making the video, providing guidelines for my initial and consequent contact with college coaches, offered advice for my college visits and meetings with coaches. SportsForce was great!

4. What advice would you give to other players and parents with the recruiting process?

Get your emails out early to college coaches, contact as many coaches as possible. Some colleges that I added to my list later in the year meant that the deadline to apply to the school had passed. Send emails early and leave enough time to visit the school and apply. Many deadlines for applications are the beginning of Jan or Feb.

5. How excited are you on your future in college?

I am very excited to take my basketball career to the next step and play at the collegiate level. This is something that every boy dreams of and now my dream has come true, with a lot of hard work and help from SportsForce!!!

6. How much money do you anticipate your family saving in college expenses?

I am not exactly sure how much money I saved as a result of basketball but my parents estimate it to be around $35,000 – $40,000 (over the 4 years). The money at Division III does not come directly from athletic funds or scholarships but is rolled into the financial aid package.

7. Would you recommend SportsForce to any other student-athletes? Why?

I would recommend SportsForce to any high school athlete who has the desire to play ball at the collegiate level. They are helpful in a variety of ways and the money you put into the program comes back around, for just under $500 my family is saving an upward of $35,000 and to play ball at the collegiate level……PRICELESS!!!

Over the last five years SportsForce Recruiting has helped over 1,000 student-athletes and families successfully navigate the college recruiting and athletic scholarship process while saving families on average $50,000 in college expenses.

1. Why did you decide to sign with Hesston College?

They actually found me–and it was a blessing! The soccer coach found me on berecruited.com. I decided to sign my letter of intent with Hesston College for many reasons. I wanted to attend a small college–most of my friends were going to OSU or U of O, both sporting over 25,000 students. Hesston only has 450 students enrolled. I wanted the lifetime experience of attending a school in a different state, a different geographical location, and I wanted to experience something that I have never experienced before. Hesston had everything I wanted all wrapped up in a bow.

2. Describe the excitement you feel about becoming a college student-athlete?

Excitement, are you kidding? It was beyond excitement, beyond words. I wish everyone could experience the thrill that I had when I heard that I received not only a soccer scholarship, but an opportunity grant on top of it. I was delighted. My dream was not only to attend college, but to also play soccer. This is a huge dream come true for me!

3. What advice would you give to other athletes looking to get recruited?

Don’t give up. Start early with having your parents videotape your games. If possible take only about 10 minutes of total video and some still shots and add some stats and facts about yourself. Don’t let anyone take your dream away from you and if one coach doesn’t think you have the skills or the speed, don’t let them discourage you. Sometimes their judgment of your abilities could be wrong, so keep practicing, training, stay clean and keep up your schoolwork. Eventually your hard work will pay off.

4. Who has been the biggest influence in your sports career and why?

Probably my parents–they went to every single game and practice, washed my practice gear, and made sure I had every opportunity to achieve my dream goal of playing college soccer.

5. What would you like to accomplish during your college sports career?

I would love to be picked up by a 4-year school. Currently, I will be playing for Hesston College in Kansas, which is only a 2-year private school. I would love to play for a D-3 or D-2 school; because of my height I doubt that I will be able to play D-1. But for now I am good, and am happy that I’m playing!

1. Why did you decide to sign with Stevens Institute of Technology?

It has a great reputation for engineers everywhere and it is a prestigious school to play lacrosse, with a chance to win a national championship. Coach Peluso and Coach Madalon and Coach Koch are very great teachers of the game.

2. Describe the excitement you feel about becoming a college student-athlete?

I’m one of a very special group that gets to continue their dream of playing sports in college; I am absolutely excited to have this opportunity.

3. What advice would you give to other athletes looking to get recruited?

The game of lacrosse and recruiting is speeding up; there are sophomores committing left and right. Every opportunity you have, visit colleges and call coaches. It can only help and may be the difference between your dream school and settling.

4. Who has been the biggest influence in your sports career and why?

My first ever coach, John Gendron. He has introduced the game to me and all my friends that lived on my street. Without him and his teaching of the fundamentals, I wouldn’t be the player I am today.

5. What would you like to accomplish during your college sports career?

I would like to enhance my skills on defense and make a true name for myself. Also I would like to start many long-lasting friendships with my teammates and fans. My hopes for the team are to win conference, as well as contend for a national championship.

1. Why did you decide to sign with Tennessee Wesleyan College?

I loved the campus and location. They have the degree I am pursuing: Exercise Science. I really liked the soccer Coach (Naomi) and the girls I met on the team were awesome. I could also play starting my freshman year and that’s huge. Overall I could see myself really happy there for 4 years.

2. Describe the excitement you feel about becoming a college student-athlete?

I have had dreams of progressing in my game of soccer and this is another step on my ladder. I am so proud that all my hard work has paid off and I want to keep working hard the next four years in developing further, and I hope maybe to continue playing after college. Who knows? National team, Olympic team, play abroad professionally or in the US – anything is possible.

3. What advice would you give to other athletes looking to get recruited?

I would make sure you are on the right club team to get noticed. You need to market yourself. Reach out to colleges that interest you and don’t give up. Keep working hard in the classroom and on the pitch.

4. Who has been the biggest influence in your sports career and why?

There are a lot of influences but I love Abbey Wambach. She is so awesome, not only as a dominant soccer player but as a role model for young women and a great leader on the US team.

5. What would you like to accomplish during your college sports career?

I want to earn a starting spot and I would like to be a person that is there for my teammates. I would like to win championships, of course, and improve my game to earn the opportunity to take my game to the next level after college.

1. Why did you decide to sign with Adrian College?

I chose Adrian, because it had everything I wanted in a school. A great lacrosse program, but also a great program for what I want to major in. They take their sports and academics seriously, which is something I value. They also helped a lot financially, because it is not cheap to attend school here and they do their best to get you as much aid as possible.

2. Describe the excitement you feel about becoming a college student-athlete?

It’s great to know that I’ve excelled enough in my sport to be able to play in college. I wasn’t a big star on my high school team, so to do something that not many people get to do is cool. On top of that I don’t come from a lacrosse heavy area, so being able to stand out above amazing players from the hotbeds of lacrosse is a great feeling.

3. What advice would you give to other athletes looking to get recruited?

Don’t wait for coaches to come to you, be proactive. It shows a lot of you as a person to approach a coach by yourself and show them you have passion and drive to play for their team. Also be gracious, these coaches don’t have to talk to you, so reply to all emails, call them back, and always say thank you, because they’ll remember someone who was nice and genuine over the cocky star athlete.

4. Who has been the biggest influence in your sports career and why?

My dad has really pushed me in my sports career. He went to as many games as possible, especially after missing a year because he was deployed to Afghanistan. He really knows the game now that I’ve been playing for 8 years and he helps the other parents figure out what’s going on. He also really wanted to be active in the recruiting process and he helped me say the right things to coaches which really helped sell me as a player.

5. What would you like to accomplish during your college sports career?

I really want to excel as a player, and be better than I was in high school. I hope that I can develop my skills and push myself to be better than people thought I was. I also want to make people from my high school team proud.

Drew Peters

1. Why did you decide to sign with Elgin Community College? I decided to sign with Elgin Community College due to its rich program history and how great of a feeder program it has. There have been many players signed to big Division 1 schools out of Elgin and that’s my goal. I also know I can get my core classes out of the way and be prepared to go into my field of engineering. The goal at Elgin is to get stronger and put on some weight to add muscle and throw harder. I am already on a workout program for them and I’m excited to see results. 2. Describe the excitement you feel about becoming a college student-athlete? Being able to continue to play baseball at the collegiate level is a feeling not many people can have. I am extremely grateful for this opportunity and it’s great to know that if you can set your mind to something, you can achieve it. 3. What advice would you give to other athletes looking to get recruited? Getting recruited is a VERY difficult task. You have to be seen at the right time by the right people. You have to go where you feel right because if you don’t fall in love with the college that you’ll be at for quite some time, you will hate it. I was scouted by Division 1 schools, but I really didn’t get any offers. My dream has always been to play Division 1 baseball and that’s why I decided to take the Juco route. You have to make the most of your opportunities because you can only play baseball for so long, and you do not want to have regrets later in life. 4. Who has been the biggest influence in your sports career and why? My mom, she has always been very supportive of all my sports and activities. She is extremely busy with work nearly every day of the week, but still manages to find time to come and watch me play baseball, no matter where it is. I can give credit to Pat Fosnacht for teaching me the ways of baseball and I am extremely thankful for everything he did. 5. What would you like to accomplish during your college sports career? First off, I want to get an invite to the NJCAA World Series while I’m at Elgin and hopefully win it. My next step would be getting recruited to a big Division 1 school to play the rest of my career and hopefully get to the NCAA World Series. My overall biggest goal is to get drafted, no matter where or when, and have that opportunity that so few get.   Our Mission at SportsForce Baseball: We are on a mission to help our select number of qualified and evaluated players maximize their recruiting offers and make the best college decision. Why SportsForce is Different: * View our Home Page Video Unlike most recruiting companies, we do not just partner with anyone for our hands-on recruiting programs. Instead, we only partner with qualified players who meet our Five academic, athletic, and coachability selection factors. We evaluate between 10,000-12,000 players each summer and fall at top showcases and selectively advise, and advocate for only a limited number of players each year by directly contacting college coaches to help them maximize recruiting offers. Each of our expert college recruiters is limited to how many players they will advise so there is the best combination of hands-on guidance and personal recruiting outreach to college coaches. Social Media Exposure: We also utilize our growing Twitter following at @SportsForceBB which is followed by over 500 NCAA D1, D2, D3, NAIA, and JC coaches nationwide and growing fast. To Get Evaluated by Our Expert College Recruiting Staff: Option 1: Complete our Recruiting Questionnaire Option 2: Email us at scouting@sportsforceonline.com Options 3: DM us on Instagram @SportsForceBB or Twitter @SportsForceBB and share recent video, stats, or measurables (velocity, 60, exit speed, pop time, etc…) for our scouts to evaluate.
